Calando

/kəˈlɑːndoʊ/kah-LAHN-doh
Tempo MarkingsItalian
Also written as: cal.

Definition. Decreasing in both volume and tempo simultaneously — a fading away.

Detailed Explanation

Calando is one of the most poetic markings in Italian musical vocabulary. It instructs the performer to decrease both the tempo and the volume at the same time, producing a sensation of the music receding into the distance. The literal Italian meaning is ‘dropping’ or ‘falling away’.

Unlike a simple diminuendo or ritardando, calando combines both: the music doesn’t merely soften or slow, it dissolves. Composers use it at the close of intimate movements (Schumann’s Träumerei is a textbook example), at the end of slow lullabies, and wherever they want the music to vanish rather than stop.

The length of a calando is usually proportional to the gesture being closed. A short calando may span just a beat or two; a long one can extend across a full phrase. The endpoint is often niente — nothing — meaning the sound should literally die away to silence.

Etymology

Italian gerund of calare (‘to drop, lower, decline’), from Latin calare (‘to lower, let down’).

In Practice

Treat calando as a coordinated act. If you only diminuendo, the listener will perceive the music as continuing at tempo from far away. If you only ritardando, the music will sound emphatic. The trick is to fade volume and tempo together so the listener cannot pin down exactly when the sound ended.

Notable Examples

  • Schumann — Träumerei from Kinderszenen  (the closing bars)
  • Brahms — Wiegenlied (Lullaby), Op. 49 No. 4  (evaporating into the final cadence)
