This tiny motif (often described as ‘fate knocking at the door’) is woven through the entire symphony, appearing in countless transformations: rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, textural. The work is essentially an extended exploration of this single motif.

Motivic composition — building large structures from small motifs and their development — is a hallmark of Beethoven, Brahms, and especially Wagner (whose leitmotifs in the Ring cycle are essentially extended motifs representing characters and ideas).
