D.S. al Coda

D.S. al coda is shorthand for Dal segno al coda — ‘from the sign, to coda’. The instruction tells the performer to return to the segno (𝄋) marker and play forward until reaching a ‘to coda’ direction; at that point, jump to the coda symbol (𝄌) and play the coda section to the end.

The direction is common in popular music, jazz, and theatre scores, where the same musical material is reprised but with a different ending — a coda that wraps up the piece definitively. The structure is: play through to D.S.; jump back to segno; play forward to ‘to coda’; jump to coda; play to end.

The combination of dal segno with coda allows complex formal structures with reprises and substituted endings — a flexibility that makes the marking a workhorse of musical theatre and popular song forms.

Italian, ‘from the sign, to the coda’.

Play to D.S.; jump back to the segno; play forward to ‘to coda’; jump to the coda symbol; play coda to end. Practice the navigation before performance — getting lost during a D.S. al coda is a common error.
