Definition. Heroically — playing with heroic, noble, valiant character.
Eroico is Italian for ‘heroic’. As a performance direction it instructs the performer to play with heroic, noble, valiant character — full of grandeur, dignity, and triumphant spirit. The marking is closely related to maestoso (majestically) and nobile (nobly), but with an added flavor of action and triumph.
The character is grand and triumphant. Eroico passages typically feature broad tempos, full dynamics, weighted articulation, and tone of full richness. The marking implies a sense of victory or noble action — the music celebrating something great.
Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony (Symphony No. 3) is the great example. The work was originally dedicated to Napoleon and titled to celebrate heroic action; the music itself essentially defines eroico character. Liszt’s ‘Eroica’ étude and several other works carry the same spirit.
Italian, ‘heroic’, from Greek hērōikos, from hērōs (‘hero’).
Play big and noble. Full bow, full breath, weighted touch. Tempo should be steady and broad; tone should be rich and full; phrasing should feel triumphant.
