The basic piano chords are the major and minor triads on the 12 keys: 24 chords in total. Start with the seven major chords on the white keys, then learn their minor versions. These chords are in the first two columns of the chart.
Each row is a root note and each column is a chord type. Find the root in the left column, go across to the chord type and click the chord. The chord page shows the keys to press, the notes, the inversions and a fingering for each hand.
Start on the root. Add the key four semitones higher (the major third) and the key seven semitones higher (the perfect fifth). For example, C Major is C, E, G.
A minor chord has its middle note one semitone lower than the major chord. C Major is C, E, G; C Minor is C, E♭, G. This one semitone changes a bright sound into a darker, sadder sound.
For a three-note chord in root position, the right hand usually plays with fingers 1, 3 and 5 (thumb, middle finger and little finger). The left hand uses 5, 3 and 1. For inversions and four-note chords, open the chord page to see the fingering.
Songtive has 89 chord types on each key. This chart shows the 96 most common ones. To see all chords on one key, open that key in the list below the chart.
