Een akkoordformule beschrijft welke intervallen een akkoord op zijn grondtoon stapelt. Een majeurdrieklank is 0–4–7 halve tonen (grondtoon, grote terts, reine kwint); een mineurdrieklank verlaagt de terts: 0–3–7. Septiemakkoorden voegen er een terts bovenop toe: Cmaj7 is 0–4–7–11, C7 is 0–4–7–10.
Dezelfde formule werkt vanaf elke grondtoon: transponeer de halvetoon-afstanden naar een andere grondtoon en je krijgt hetzelfde akkoordtype in een andere toonsoort. Gebruik dit overzicht samen met de toonladderpagina's om te vinden welke akkoorden bij een toonsoort passen.
Een akkoordformule is de reeks intervallen, meestal geschreven in halve tonen of toontrappen, die een akkoordtype bepaalt ongeacht de grondtoon — bijvoorbeeld majeur = 0–4–7 halve tonen (1–3–5).
C7 (dominantseptiem) gebruikt een kleine septiem: C–E–G–B♭ (0–4–7–10). Cmaj7 gebruikt een grote septiem: C–E–G–B (0–4–7–11). Dat ene halvetoon-verschil verandert de functie van het akkoord volledig.
Tel dezelfde halvetoon-afstanden op bij elke grondtoon. Een mineurdrieklank (0–3–7) vanaf A geeft A–C–E; vanaf F♯ geeft hij F♯–A–C♯. Het akkoordtype blijft gelijk, alleen de toonhoogte verandert.
